Statement Of Purpose Architecture Essays

Paragraph 1: Personal

The first paragraph is where you get personal with the reader. This is when you write about the moment you realized you wanted to pursue architecture. Where did the inspiration come from? What was that moment of realization like? Were you that kid who built tents out of your mother’s clean linen in your living room? Did you get new Lego sets every Christmas? Have you taken a trip somewhere new and became fascinated by your surroundings? Be specific to how your interest in architecture started and grew.

Graduate programs want passionate students. They want to have students that are passionate about what they want to do. This is an opportunity to show them why you want it.

Paragraph 2: Knowledge Seeking

What have you done thus far in undergrad to pursue your interest in architecture? What classes did you take that relate to your interest? Were there specific electives you took that sparked curiosity? Take this time to discuss your experiences in a class, with a professor, an internship or a study abroad trip. What skills have you obtain from these experiences? Talk about the specific moments and steps you took to further discover a topic in architecture you like.

Graduate schools want the students that have experience in seeking knowledge on their own. They want to know that students are capable of researching and pursuing interest for their own benefit.

Paragraph 3: Why Masters?

What is the reason you want to pursue a Masters degree? Do you feel that you still have things you need to learn? This is not a bad thing to state. Discuss the skills you need to acquire, develop or expand. You might be looking to strengthening your design skills with a Masters. You might be interested in expanding your knowledge on a specific topic in architecture. Reflect back on your ultimate goals and ask yourself what you need to better increase your probabilities to reach that goal.

M.Arch programs want students that are self-aware; those that know their strengths and weaknesses. The school wants to know that you are taking the next step to gather experience to accomplish your goal by entering a Masters program. This demonstrates that you actually will benefit from getting a Masters degree.

Paragraph 4: Why this university?

Specifically talk about why you chose this school. It is important to show your enthusiasm for that particular school and why it’s a perfect match for you. Research what they have to offer; what is their program like, what classes do they have, who are the professors? Demonstrate how they will help you accomplish your goal.

You have to prove why you want to attend their school. Being specific about their school will exhibit your ability to research and gain knowledge, like a prospective student.

Conclusion

A short conclusion, that sums up how the school is going to help you accomplish your goal. How, with a Masters in Architecture, you are going to chase your goal for a better future.

Overall

Keep your statement of purpose personal, clean, and exciting. Show enthusiasm throughout the entire thing by speaking from the heart. Keep the momentum building so your conclusion will be like a blast of fireworks that celebrates your entire statement!

Have fun with it!
